Connection

Connection

Connection. White Carrara marble, 80x30x15 cm

This sculpture is a reflection on materiality. It symbolically represents the strong connection between the material, the artist, and the artist’s endeavor to transform a material into a form. Connection is about the interaction – that is, the bilateral, mutual relationship – between a material with its inner soul and its creator with their outer influence. By the intimacy of such touch, the artist reveals not only the material but also its essence, its quiddity, its whatness. More than this, the artist touches the artwork, the artwork touches the artist, and their voices are together created. In this way, my sculpture Connection also refers to Michelangelo’s fresco The Creation of Adam, a panel on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, that depicts an episode from Genesis. But in contrast to the hands of the human and the divine, the two hands in my Connection create each other, as they reach for one another from above and from below, towards the depths of inspiration, and towards the heights of possibility.
