FALL OF IKARUS

FALL OF IKARUS

Fall of Ikarus. Carrara marble calacatta. 100x80x60cm

The myth of Ikarus captures the tragic beauty of this human experience: our desire to fly, reach the unreachable, and transcend earthly limitations.

My marble Ikarus is falling on an iron pillow, which I found in an old quarry. These kinds of pillows are used in quarries to excavate marble. Thus, this pillow becomes a symbol of Ikarus’s salvation and rebirth in his attempt to fly again, much like how the pillows in quarries “push” the blocks of marble out into flight, into becoming a work of art.
